Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport - All Information on Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is situated in Hebron at the very top of Kentucky, United States. It serves the greater Cincinnati area, which includes Cincinnati, Ohio as the major city closest to the airport only a few km/mi from the airport, across the Ohio River.

The airport’s IATA code is CVG, after the nearest city, Covington, Kentucky, at the time of the airport’s opening, and the ICAO code is KCVG.

The airport is a global hub for Amazon Air, Atlas Air, ABX Air, Kalitta Air, Southern Air and DHL Aviation, handling a vast amount of both domestic and international cargo flights every day.

It is the 7th busiest airport in the US based on cargo traffic and it is the fastest growing cargo airport in North America.

The airport handled 1,434,132 tons of cargo in 2020.

CVG has four runways; two asphalt/concrete and two concrete. The two asphalt/concrete runways are 12,000 ft/3,658 m and 11,000 ft/3,353 m respectively while the two concrete runways are 10,000 ft/3,048 m and 8,000 ft/2,438 m respectively.

The airport carried 3,615,139 passengers in 2020 and saw 113,377 aircraft operations in that same year.

The airfield first opened in 1944 after President Franklin D. Roosevelt had approved funds for the site's development a couple of years earlier as part of the United States Army Air Corps program to establish training facilities during the Second World War. However, the Air Corps only used the airfield for a few months before it was declared surplus in 1945 as the war was ending.

The first terminal was built with wood and it opened in 1946 as the airport prepared itself for commercial services. It also took the name Greater Cincinnati Airport. Boone County Airlines offered the first scheduled flights from the airport. The first commercial flight landed at the airport in January of 1947, an American Airlines flight from Cleveland.

Over the years the airport’s terminals have come and gone and today it is a single terminal building with two concourses that serve all commercial flights and passengers. The terminal and the two concourses have a total of 50 gates, 22 in Concourse A and 28 in Concourse B.

The airport is owned and operated by Kenton County Airport Board.
